Three boaters were rescued safely on Friday after their vessel began taking on water near Virginia Key in Miami, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. A crew from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach responded to the emergency and brought all three individuals to shore without injuries.
Rescue Operation Near Virginia Key
The incident began when 911 dispatchers contacted Coast Guard Sector Miami watchstanders at approximately 12:19 p.m. to report a vessel in distress roughly three miles east of Government Cut. A rescue crew from Station Miami Beach reached the scene by about 12:37 p.m. and found all three mariners aboard a partially submerged boat.
All three individuals were wearing life jackets at the time of the rescue and were transported to Crandon Park Marina. No injuries were reported.
Life Jackets Credited With Keeping Boaters Safe
“All three mariners were wearing life jackets, which played a critical role in keeping them safe,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kyle Consford, a Station Miami Beach boat crew member. “We want to remind boaters to always check local weather conditions before heading out on the water. Even short trips can become dangerous if storms develop unexpectedly.”
Vessel Recovered by Commercial Salvage
Following the rescue, a commercial salvage operation recovered the distressed vessel. The Coast Guard used the opportunity to remind all boaters to stay vigilant on the water and encouraged mariners to complete a boating safety course.
