Prosecutors Decline to File Charges Against Former Teaching Assistant in Brevard Child Abuse Case
The State Attorney’s Office for Florida’s 18th Judicial Circuit has chosen not to pursue criminal charges against Shona T. Little, a former teaching assistant at Pineapple Cove Academy in West Melbourne who was arrested in October following a child injury at the school. Prosecutors cited insufficient evidence as the reason for declining to file the case.
Background: The Arrest
Little was taken into custody and initially charged with aggravated child abuse after law enforcement reviewed surveillance footage from Pineapple Cove Academy. Investigators documented what they described as improper handling of a child by the wrist. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the footage showed a sequence in which the child was held by the wrist, followed by movement authorities interpreted as potentially forceful enough to cause injury. The child’s parents subsequently brought the child to the hospital, where medical records later referenced a fracture diagnosis and instructions for orthopedic follow-up.
School’s Response
Pineapple Cove Academy stated that after reviewing the video, it terminated Little for violating the school’s handling policy by holding the child’s hand rather than using appropriate methods. The school said it did not observe malicious intent in the footage, but did see a clear policy violation. The school also noted that the Department of Children and Families declined to accept the incident report because the incident did not meet DCF’s intake criteria.
State’s Decision Not to Prosecute
The State Attorney’s Office confirmed via email that prosecutors concluded the evidence was insufficient to support the charges. Public reaction to the classroom video — which was circulated widely with children’s faces blurred — was largely in support of Little, with many viewers characterizing the interaction as the kind of routine physical redirection common in childcare settings rather than willful abuse warranting a first-degree felony.

Despite the case being dropped, the impact of a high-profile felony arrest in a childcare setting does not simply disappear.
