Palm Bay Drivers Outraged Over Faulty School Zone Tickets, Police Promise Fixes
The Palm Bay Police Department is working to resolve issues with its new school zone enforcement system after receiving complaints about incorrect traffic violations. The department has acknowledged the frustration caused by the rollout and is taking steps to ensure accuracy moving forward.
Lieutenant Virginia Kilmer of the Palm Bay Police Department issued a statement emphasizing the agency’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and system improvements. “First and foremost, we want to apologize for the frustration and stress the implementation of this new project has caused. We understand your concerns and we hear you,” she said.
The department recently implemented automated enforcement cameras in school zones to enhance traffic safety. However, after the system went live, several drivers reported receiving violations they believed to be incorrect. In response, the police department launched an immediate audit in collaboration with the company responsible for installing the cameras.
During this review, officials discovered system glitches affecting certain school zones. The department acted swiftly to correct the errors, ensuring that any improperly issued violations were refunded or dismissed. Notifications were sent to affected individuals, and additional oversight measures were introduced to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future.
“To make clear, there is full oversight of this program and the issuance of violations by Palm Bay Police Department’s Traffic Unit,” Lt. Kilmer stated. She assured residents that the department is verifying school zone signage, ensuring flashing signals are correctly timed, and closely monitoring the system’s performance to prevent further discrepancies.
Before reactivating enforcement, the department plans to complete another round of verification to confirm that all school zones align with school schedules and state regulations. Once the process is complete, officials will provide detailed public information about enforcement times and speed thresholds to help drivers better understand the program.
“We want to thank our community for your patience and understanding as we work through this process,” Kilmer added. “Our goal is to create a system that is not only safe for our students and community, but also reliable, fair, and efficient.”
The Palm Bay Police Department remains committed to improving the system and ensuring it functions accurately to enhance student safety. Community members are encouraged to stay informed about future updates as enforcement is reinstated.
