Armed Woman Opens Fire at Melbourne Motel, Holds Child Hostage During Mental Health Crisis
West Melbourne Police and a multi-agency SWAT team responded to a tense armed standoff at a local motel on March 17, 2026, after a woman experiencing what officers described as a mental health crisis discharged a firearm from inside a motel room and refused to release her juvenile daughter.
What Happened at the Motel
At approximately 9:30 a.m., officers were called to America’s Best Value Inn at 4431 W. New Haven Avenue following a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found Rene Florence inside the room with her young daughter. Officers determined Florence appeared to be in the midst of a mental health crisis, potentially worsened by narcotics use.
During the incident, Florence fired the weapon twice, discharging rounds out through the room’s windows and shattering the glass. Though her daughter was present throughout the standoff, Florence did not point the firearm at the child. However, Florence refused to allow the juvenile to leave and at times physically restrained her, even as officers worked to safely resolve the situation.
SWAT Responds; Officers Make Entry
Because of the firearm and the escalating nature of the standoff, the West Melbourne Police Department SWAT Team was called in, joined by a Crisis Negotiation Team from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Florence had barricaded the door, limiting officers’ ability to observe what was happening inside the room.
Officers ultimately forced entry into the room, where they observed Florence striking the child. They intervened and deployed less-lethal munitions to subdue Florence and prevent further harm. She was taken into custody without additional incident.
Drugs Found; Charges Filed
A search incident to arrest uncovered a white powdery substance on Florence’s person that field-tested presumptively positive for methamphetamine. The juvenile was safely removed from the scene and placed in appropriate care.
Florence is facing charges of false imprisonment, child abuse, domestic violence battery, discharging a firearm in public, and possession of methamphetamine. She was transported to the Brevard County Jail and held on no bond.
As with all criminal cases, the charges filed against Rene Florence are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
