Cocoa Police Communications Officer Sharla Anne Freel Passes Away at 45
The Cocoa Police Department has announced the death of Sharla Anne Freel, a longtime communications officer who dedicated nearly two decades to public safety in Brevard County. Freel passed away on January 3, 2026, just months after retiring from law enforcement service.
A Career in Public Safety Communications
Born on August 7, 1980, Freel served the Cocoa Police Department from December 17, 2007, to October 5, 2025, when she relocated to Tennessee to begin a new chapter in her life. Before joining Cocoa PD, she also served as a Communications Officer with the City of Rockledge Police Department. Over the course of her career, she was a steady and reliable presence in the communications center, handling the high-pressure demands of emergency dispatch with patience and professionalism.
Remembered for Dedication and Character
Colleagues described Freel as committed to the mission of public safety, even in a role that is often demanding and unrecognized. She was known for her team-oriented approach and her willingness to be present when it mattered most. Originally from California, Freel moved to Brevard County with her family after high school and built her adult life and career in the area.
On a personal level, Freel was remembered as deeply devoted to her son, Nate, who was described as the center of her world. Friends and coworkers noted her generous spirit and her ability to form lasting bonds with those she considered friends. She had a love for country music, 1980s rock bands, and visits to Disney World.
Department’s Tribute
The Cocoa Police Department expressed grief at the loss, noting that Freel’s years of service, her presence in the communications center, and the relationships she cultivated will not be forgotten by those who worked alongside her.
